life's unanswered questions

While our chicks were away, Dude and I decided it would be too depressing to sit in our empty nests in Los Angeles as the rain came down. And came down. And came down.

(Since it's my ex's turn to get our boys for Christmas this year, I had my "Christmas" with the boys one week early, and so far as I'm concerned the rest is details.)

We went to New York for a few days. Down the hall from our hotel room, some kind of private security was standing guard outside a suite 24/7. We passed the security guards so often en route to the elevators that we practically established relationships with them (two men, one woman, and none of them were going home for Xmas).

And yet we never learned who was inside the suite necessitating this kind of attention.

"We will never ever know," I said darkly to Dude as we left for the airport. "It will be yet another of life's unanswered questions."

I think he might have grunted in response.

Mysteries
I would be curious, too, and had my own little Christmas hotel mystery. Weeks ago I'd booked a room at a hotel in my parents' city. The night before our flight the hotel phoned; they had to bump us from the room in favor of a disabled guest with wheelchair. Understandable, of course we could move. As the hotel rep looked for a comparable room I casually asked if ours was the only room accommodating guests with special needs. That's when it got a little odd--she sort of hemmed and hawed and said the guest needed that specific room, "The Honeymoon Suite" as she called it-- news to me! I was intrigued, so tried to track down this guest, even walking around the parking lot looking for a car with special placard. I was also told by an employee that the hotel (with hundreds of rooms) was less than 20% occupied. It was a rather bittersweet Christmas, so the espionage was a welcome distraction. I never found the wheelchair-bound (or otherwise!) guest, but I hope she or he or they had a lovely stay.

About Me

I'm the author of three published novels: the dark fantasies BLOODANGEL and LORD OF BONES (Roc/Penguin) and the YA supernatural thriller UNINVITED (MTV/Simon&Schuster). I also have stories in the MAMMOTH BOOK OF VAMPIRE ROMANCE 2 and ZOMBIES: ENCOUNTERS WITH THE HUNGRY DEAD. I'm working on a psychological thriller called THE DECADENTS. I am divorced, with sons, and live in Bel Air.
